ORGANoro - A cardiac organoid based platform for drug screening and personalized medicine

Head Technology Transfer Office at Centro Cardiologico Monzino IRCCS

Milano, Italy

About

Drug development costs are impacted by preclinical models' inability to predict efficacy and cardiotoxicity. Preclinical trials, based either on 2D in vitro or animal models, are often non compliant with 3Rs guidelines and fail in recapitulating the in vivo cardiac complexity. This limits their physiological relevance and reliability, resulting in higher long-term costs.

ORGANoro is an in vitro platform, based on cardiac organoids derived from induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs). The protocol enables rapid, cost-effective, and reproducible production of organoids with relevant morphological and functional characteristics. Its versatility and ease of use make ORGANoro easily integrable into pharmacological screening protocols. Additionally, it has potential as platform for personalized medicine, supporting on-patient tailored treatments.

Compared to other cardiac organoid-based platforms already available, ORGANoro: i) reproduces cardiac features enabling better disease modeling; ii) has potential for tailored treatment strategies based on individual patient profiles; iii) facilitates the investigation of long-term effects and outcomes (up to 90 days). Additionally the system guarantees low costs and supports high-throughput automated processes.
