About

At SMIT (Studies on Media, Innovation & Technology, VUB), we combine deep-rooted social science and humanities (SSH) expertise with hands-on involvement in digital and technological innovation. Our research center has a long-standing track record in applying human-centered design principles throughout all phases of technology development — from the formulation of ideas, over concept and prototype design, to testing, validation, and real-world implementation. We therefore don’t just study people’s interaction with technology — we want to shape it from the inside out.

We work closely with engineers, developers, and innovation partners across sectors to ensure that technology is not only technically functional, but also ethically aligned, user-accepted, and socially relevant. Drawing on interdisciplinary methods from communication science, behavioral research, design studies, and STS (Science & Technology Studies), we ensure that innovation processes incorporate the voices of all relevant stakeholders — whether users, citizens, professionals, or public authorities.

Our expertise includes:

  • "Early-stage research" to uncover user needs, values, and societal priorities
  • "Participatory design methods" to co-create meaningful and inclusive solutions
  • "Ethical and governance frameworks for socially responsible innovation
  • "User experience, acceptance, and impact evaluation" in lab and living lab settings

SMIT’s human-centered approach enhances the societal quality, trustworthiness, and sustainability of technological solutions.
