About

The Medical University of Vienna (MUW) is one of Europe’s oldest and most prestigious medical institutions, originally established in 1365 and reconstituted as an independent university in 2004. It is the largest medical training and research center in the German-speaking world, with approximately 8,600 students and more than 6,500 staff members. Closely affiliated with Vienna General Hospital (AKH), MUW integrates clinical practice with research and education. The university operates over 30 clinical departments and multiple specialized research centers, and is expanding its infrastructure to advance cutting-edge biomedical research and personalized medicine. At MUW the Nationale Reference Center for Post-viral Syndromes by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Labour, Social Affairs, Health, Care and Consumer Protection is located, which is co-lead by Assoc. Prof. DDr. Eva Untersmayr-Elsenhuber. As one of the central organizational units, the Center for Pathophysiology, Infectiology and Immunology acts as a “bridge” between medical theory and clinical practice. It investigates immunological and infectiological causes of disease, knowledge of disease processes and pathogens, and works toward new treatment strategies. The Institute of Pathophysiology and Allergy Research (IPA) has an outstanding reputation for research on the mechanisms of immunology involving precision diagnosis and definition of personalized treatment strategies.
