Sustainability is no longer a side concern—it’s a core system requirement. But how can we measure and improve the ecological footprint of a system early in development, when decisions matter most? SysML v2 offers a unique opportunity to embed sustainability into the design process.
In this hands-on workshop, you’ll learn how to automate Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) using a SysML v2 system model. We’ll walk through how to model a system's structure and functions in SysML v2, and how to connect this model to ecological databases and assessment tools (e.g., openLCA). You'll see how to extract data from the model and automate footprint calculations via Jupyter notebooks.
The goal is to move from abstract environmental goals to concrete, traceable sustainability metrics—all within your existing MBSE workflow.
This session introduces an applied method to:
• Integrate ecological footprint thinking into early system design
• Use SysML v2 models as a data source for automated LCA
• Bridge the gap between engineering and environmental compliance (e.g., ISO 14044)
Participants will:
• Understand the basics of Life Cycle Assessment in the context of systems engineering
• Learn how to structure system models in SysML v2 to enable automated assessment
• Practice hands-on steps for connecting SysML data to footprint analysis tools
• Explore how automation enables faster design feedback and more sustainable decisions
This workshop is open to all experience levels. No prior knowledge is required, but some familiarity with MBSE, SysML v2, or LCA is helpful.
