I work on the development of engineered soil systems through a framework called Biorestorer, based on the concept of synthetic succession. The approach focuses on initiating soil-like functionality in mineral-based, soilless environments by integrating locally available materials, carbon scaffolds such as biochar, and microbial processes within a staged system design.
The objective is to enable plant growth without reliance on natural soils or conventional organic inputs, using resource-efficient configurations that can operate under constrained conditions. This includes the use of non-ideal or waste-derived materials as functional components of the system.
The work is positioned at the intersection of eco-engineering, substrate design, and bioregenerative systems, with potential applications in controlled environment agriculture, soil-independent cultivation systems, and resource-constrained environments, including ISRU-oriented contexts.
Current activities focus on exploratory system-level testing and development of the framework, with an emphasis on feasibility, system integration, and staged functional development.
