About

The University of Birmingham is seeking to join a Horizon Europe 2027 consortium addressing advanced materials and reduced dependence on Critical and Strategic Raw Materials, particularly in hydrogen and electrolysis technologies.

We can contribute expertise in low-Ir PEM water electrolysis, advanced electrocatalyst and electrode design, materials synthesis and characterisation, electrochemical testing, durability evaluation, reaction mechanisms and performance–stability optimisation.

Our research is particularly relevant to reducing iridium utilisation while maintaining high catalytic activity, durability and practically relevant electrochemical performance. We are also interested in integrating data-driven and AI-assisted materials discovery with experimental synthesis and electrochemical validation.

We are interested in collaborating with coordinators and partners working on advanced materials, catalyst and electrode manufacturing, PEM electrolysers and MEAs, materials modelling, AI-driven materials discovery, scale-up, sustainability, LCA/SSbD and industrial demonstration.
