Renaldas Raisutis

Director, Chief researcher, professor

Ultrasound Research Institute, Kaunas University of Technology

Kaunas, Lithuania

Expert (experience 25+ years) in ultrasonic NDT, SHM, AI-driven diagnostics, imaging, aerospace, energy, transport, health sectors.

My organisation

The Ultrasound Research Institute represents majority of ultrasonic research groups at Kaunas University of Technology. Ultrasound research spans over 60 years of activity in the field of ultrasonic measurements and non-destructive testing, with more than 1000 publications, over 150 patents and created over 100 different techniques and measurement instruments developed for various industrial and scientific applications. Active involvement in master‘s and PhD studies, leading researchers of Institute are members of Electrical and Electronics Engineering PhD committee, and members of Measurement Engineering PhD committee. The Ultrasound Research Institute of Kaunas University of Technology successfully participated and participates in 24 international FP5, FP6, FP7 and 2 Eurostars projects, 5 Horizon 2020 projects, 2 Horizon Europe projects, 4 Euratom and numerous international contracts with companies. The main area of interest covers development of new advanced ultrasonic measurement, imaging and non-destructive techniques for extreme conditions (high temperatures, strong radioactive radiation, high pressure, aerospace and chemical activity) and non-conventional applications of non-destructive testing (NDT), monitoring, quality control and predictive maintenance. Also measurements, material characterization, artificial intelligence based diagnostics and clinical decision support in medical field. Those techniques are oriented to solve the complicated questions related to the Industry 4.0 / NDT 4.0, smart factories, construction safety, defence applications, environment safety and human health.

About me

Prof. Dr Renaldas Raišutis is the Chief Researcher, Head of the Numerical Simulation Laboratory and Director of the Prof. Kazimieras Baršauskas Ultrasound Research Institute at Kaunas University of Technology (KTU). He also serves as a Professor at the Department of Electrical Power Systems, Faculty of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at KTU. Prof. Raišutis has over 25 years of interdisciplinary experience in the research, development, and implementation of advanced ultrasonic non-destructive testing (NDT), structural health monitoring (SHM), and diagnostic measurement technologies. His expertise spans thermal, optical, and spectrophotometric imaging, along with the development of signal and image processing algorithms, decision support systems, and AI/ML-based analysis tools for the extraction of informative quantitative parameters from complex diagnostic data, classification and decision support. His research and technological developments address applications across aerospace, transportation, energy sectors (nuclear, renewable and fossil), oil and gas, healthcare and medical technologies, biotechnology, and process automation, supporting innovation in Industry 4.0 / NDT 4.0 and smart manufacturing environments.

Prof. Raišutis is the author or co-author of over 126 peer-reviewed scientific publications, 63 international conference proceedings, and holds an h-index of 18 (Clarivate Analytics). He is also the inventor and co-author of 27 patents and patent applications, including both international (EU and US) and national filings.  He actively contributes to academic governance and professional societies as a member of the KTU Senate, Chair of the Doctoral Committee in Measurement Engineering, and member of the Doctoral Committee in Electrical and Electronics Engineering. He is also a peer reviewer for journals such as BINDT Insight, IEEE, Elsevier etc..

Prof. Raišutis holds memberships in several international and national professional organizations, including the IEEE, European Structural Integrity Society (ESIS), Lithuanian Biomedical Engineering Society, Lithuanian Society of Acoustics, Lithuanian Society of Telemedicine, EFSUMB (European Federation of Societies for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology) and the Lithuanian Society for NDT and Technical Diagnostics, where he currently serves as President. He is also a member of the Lithuanian Business Angel Network (LitBAN), contributing to start-up mentoring and technological entrepreneurship.

He has coordinated or participated in over 22 international R&D projects, including EC supported Framework FP5–FP7, Eurostars, Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe, as well as 15 national research initiatives, securing more than 10 million EUR in research funding. He currently supervises six PhD candidates, with three having successfully defended their dissertations. As a consultant, he provides expert advice to international companies, public institutions, and government bodies, including roles as a technical expert for the Eureka Secretariat and advisor to the Lithuanian Research Council. His contributions to innovation and research excellence have been recognized through multiple awards, including the KTU Researcher of the Year Award (2010) and the Dr. Juozas Petras Kazickas Foundation Awards (2011, 2017).
