Integrated Rapid Testing and Digital Surveillance for Chagas Disease

Researcher and Coordinator of the Infectious Diseases Research Service, FUNED at Fundação Ezequiel Dias

Belo Horizonte, Brazil

About

Project overview

We are developing na integrated technology platform to strengthen Chagas disease surveillance by combining rapid diagnostic testing with digital tools for community-based entomological surveillance.

Technology development

The project brings together two complementary components:

- Rapid diagnostic test: Development of a test to detect human blood and Trypanosoma cruzi in triatomine bugs, supported by monoclonal antibody production currently underway.

- AI-based mobile application: Development of na application to help community members identify suspected triatomines through image analysis and record their geographic locations, generating georeferenced information for surveillance.

By integrating these technologies, the project aims to improve the identification and characterization of epidemiologically relevant vectors and support public health authorities in prioritizing surveillance and control activities.

Seeking collaboration

We are seeking partners with expertise in biotechnology, rapid diagnostic development, monoclonal antibodies, artificial intelligence, image recognition, mobile applications, and geospatial analysis.

Potential collaboration activities include joint research and development, prototype optimization, software development, analytical and field validation, and integration of diagnostic and geospatial data into surveillance workflows.

Global potential and scalability

The initial focus is Latin America, where Chagas disease represents an important public health challenge. However, the platform could be adapted for use in other regions where T. cruzi, triatomine vectors, and animal reservoirs are present or where ecological and climatic conditions may favor their establishment. Beyond the Americas, the technology could support surveillance in settings facing emerging risks of vector establishment and local transmission, as well as regions where imported infections create additional public health challenges.

Our long-term goal is to develop a scalable and adaptable platform that integrates rapid testing, AI-assisted insect identification, and geospatial information to strengthen early detection, risk assessment, and Chagas disease surveillance across diverse epidemiological settings worldwide.
