About

Challenge:

Mobile hydrogen-powered assets, such as fuel-cell generators in remote construction sites, often rely on reactive replenishment because operators cannot accurately predict when hydrogen levels will become critical. This leads to emergency deliveries, unnecessary transport movements, higher operating costs, and asset downtime. Additionally, operational data are typically distributed across multiple stakeholders and cannot easily be centralized due to commercial and security concerns.

H2-LOGIC Solution:

Building on the TRL6 monitoring and sensing technology (H2SENSE) and S&C's TRL9 logistics platform (IOLOCATE), H2-LOGIC will develop a predictive logistics platform that combines hydrogen sensing, location intelligence, telemetry, operating conditions, and energy consumption data. AI models will predict hydrogen consumption, remaining autonomy, time-to-critical depletion, and replenishment needs. A decision-support engine will convert predictions into actionable recommendations on when, where, and which assets should be supplied. Federated learning will enable collaborative model improvement while keeping sensitive operational data local.

Expected Impact:

H2-LOGIC will reduce emergency refueling events, minimize asset downtime, improve hydrogen availability, and optimize logistics planning. The solution is expected to lower logistics costs, reduce unnecessary transport movements and associated emissions, and improve resource utilization. Beyond construction applications, the platform can be replicated across hydrogen mobility fleets, mobile energy systems, and other distributed hydrogen-consuming assets.

Work Plan:

Over 12 months, the project will progress from TRL6 to TRL9 through four work packages: requirements and architecture (M1-M2), IoT integration and AI model development (M2-M6), decision support and demonstrator development including federated learning (M5-M9), and operational demonstration, validation, and commercialization planning (M9-M12). The final outcome will be a market-ready predictive hydrogen logistics solution integrated into the IOLOCATE platform.
