H2SWAP – Hydrogen Capsule Based Ecosystem for Industrial Mobility
Mechanical Engineer at Kinergy Fuel Cell
Spain
About
The project aims to demonstrate an integrated hydrogen solution for industrial logistics by converting an existing electric forklift to a hybrid PEM fuel-cell/battery architecture and supplying it with locally produced hydrogen through interchangeable 350-bar capsules.
The solution integrates three complementary technologies: on-site hydrogen production through membrane-free decoupled water electrolysis, hydrogen compression and interchangeable high-pressure storage, and a PEM fuel-cell power system integrated with a buffer battery and the forklift’s existing electric traction and lifting systems.
The project will be developed by an SME consortium bringing together Kinergy Fuel Cell, ProtiumTech and Hydros Power, with an industrial logistics operator providing the pilot environment. The complete system will be integrated, tested and demonstrated under representative operating conditions.
The main innovation lies in the modular integration of hydrogen production, storage and vehicle operation, enabling hydrogen production to be managed independently from vehicle use while allowing rapid energy replenishment through capsule exchange.
The project mainly addresses the IH-MIE challenge Integration with Other Mobility Solutions, while also contributing to Refuelling Infrastructure and On-board Hydrogen Storage.
The expected outcome is a validated and replicable hydrogen-based solution for forklifts and other industrial mobility applications, supporting future deployment in logistics centres, industrial facilities and similar intensive-use environments.
