About
HYDRA (Hydrogen Drone for Resilient Aerial Applications) aims to develop, build, and validate a next-generation hydrogen-powered dual-use unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) capable of significantly extending flight endurance while producing zero direct emissions. The project addresses the growing demand for sustainable, long-range autonomous aerial platforms that can support both civilian and public security operations.
Current battery-powered UAVs are limited by short flight times, restricting their use in long-duration missions such as infrastructure inspection, environmental monitoring, disaster response, border surveillance, search and rescue, and critical infrastructure protection. HYDRA will overcome these limitations by integrating an advanced PEM fuel cell system with lightweight compressed hydrogen storage, intelligent energy management, and a modular UAV architecture capable of supporting multiple payload configurations.
The project will begin with a comprehensive technical and economic feasibility study, followed by the engineering design and development of the hydrogen propulsion system. The consortium will optimize hydrogen storage, power management, flight control integration, safety systems, and lightweight structural components to maximize endurance, reliability, and operational efficiency.
A fully functional prototype will be manufactured and validated through laboratory testing and real-world flight demonstrations. The validation campaign will evaluate flight endurance, power consumption, hydrogen efficiency, payload capability, operational safety, environmental performance, and system reliability under representative operating conditions.
The project will also develop digital monitoring and diagnostics tools, enabling real-time performance analysis, predictive maintenance, and operational optimization. A comprehensive commercialization strategy, market analysis, intellectual property roadmap, and exploitation plan will be prepared to accelerate market entry and future industrial deployment.
HYDRA builds upon the consortium's practical experience in hydrogen technologies, including the development of PEM electrolyzer stacks with innovative catalyst coatings, hydrogen production and storage systems, and the deployment of hydrogen-powered airport ground support equipment in cooperation with the German manufacturer MULAG. This experience provides a strong technological foundation for transferring hydrogen technologies from ground mobility to advanced aerial applications.
The project will contribute to the European Green Deal, the EU Hydrogen Strategy, and the Sustainable and Smart Mobility Strategy by demonstrating hydrogen as a viable zero-emission energy carrier for next-generation UAVs. HYDRA will strengthen European technological sovereignty in hydrogen-powered autonomous systems, support SME innovation, and create new opportunities for dual-use hydrogen mobility solutions with significant commercial and societal impact.
