About
BLUTECHNOVA | HORIZON EUROPE PROJECT COOPERATION
Topic: HORIZON-NATURE-2027-02-05 – Cost-effective biodiversity monitoring for EU policies
Focus: Area C – Water Framework Directive (WFD)
Role sought: SME technology partner / technical work package contributor
ABOUT BLUTECHNOVA
Blutechnova is an Egyptian deep-tech SME developing AI-powered coastal and marine environmental intelligence and early warning technology. Our advanced MVP combines artificial intelligence, computer vision, IoT environmental sensors, smart buoys, autonomous marine platforms and a data integration and decision-support architecture.
Our present work focuses on marine and coastal applications, including species observation, coral reef assessment, water quality, pollution monitoring and environmental risk detection. We seek research partners to adapt and validate relevant components for freshwater biodiversity monitoring and the EU Water Framework Directive; we do not claim an existing WFD-compliant freshwater product.
WHAT WE CAN CONTRIBUTE
1. AI-assisted ecological observation: Adapt computer vision and machine-learning workflows for species recognition, image interpretation, ecological indicators and anomaly detection, using validated freshwater datasets.
2. Cost-effective in-situ monitoring: Co-design IoT sensing configurations and data-acquisition workflows for water quality and relevant environmental variables, with attention to deployment, calibration and maintenance costs.
3. Integrated biodiversity data: Combine sensor streams, field observations, imagery and partner-generated genomic results in interoperable dashboards and analytical workflows, with FAIR data principles.
4. Monitoring automation: Develop data-quality checks, AI-assisted classification and decision-support features that can complement established biological assessment methods and reduce manual processing.
5. Validation and scale-up: Support prototyping, benchmarking, integration and technology validation in European demonstration sites arranged with consortium partners.
FIT WITH AREA C
Our proposed role is to supply complementary digital monitoring and sensing technologies within a scientifically led WFD consortium. We are particularly interested in working with freshwater ecologists, water authorities and laboratories experienced in eDNA, DNA metabarcoding, reference libraries and biological quality elements. Genomic sampling, laboratory analysis, and regulatory interpretation would be led by appropriately qualified partners.
PARTNERS WE SEEK
We welcome contact from Horizon Europe coordinators, universities, freshwater ecology institutes, eDNA laboratories, water-management authorities, technology SMEs and organisations operating aquatic monitoring pilots in eligible European locations.
COLLABORATION OBJECTIVES
-
Co-develop accurate, affordable and repeatable biodiversity monitoring workflows.
-
Integrate field sensing, AI analysis and partner-generated genetic biodiversity data.
-
Evaluate performance, costs, interoperability and suitability for WFD-related monitoring.
-
Contribute to well-defined technical work packages and joint research outputs.
STATUS AND NEXT STEPS
Technology stage: Advanced MVP development and validation.
Proposed position: Consortium partner, not coordinator.
Geographical base: Egypt; open to adaptation and pilot validation with European partners.
Blutechnova can contribute engineering and integration expertise, prototype components and collaborative development capacity. Specific work packages, trial locations, equipment and financial commitments would be agreed during proposal preparation.
