HORIZON-NATURE-2027-02-05: Cost-effective biodiversity monitoring for EU policies
Research Manager at Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientificas - Instituto de Ciencias del Mar
Barcelona, Spain
About
Potential contribution:
1. Scalable, cost-effective monitoring approaches, Harmonised protocols and standardised methods for long-term observatories, tested on a plankton observatory, that make monitoring comparable across scales.
2. Demonstration cases. Marine and coastal demonstration cases: monitoring of restoration outcomes (microbial dimension of restoration, habitat-forming species in a protected area) and of biological quality elements in coastal waters.
3. Assess and compare approaches. Comparison of methods across taxa, built on a baseline update of Mediterranean biodiversity and on technical workshops that already bring methods together.Formal comparison.
4. Advance DNA approaches. Microbial and molecular expertise (host-associated and environmental microbiomes), with taxonomic vouchering to link sequences to validated species.
5. Complete DNA libraries. Taxonomic expertise (TaEx Group) and plankton and Mediterranean biodiversity datasets to build and curate reference libraries for the marine and coastal groups on the WFD list.
6. Genomic techniques for population abundance. Population-level genomic and epigenetic characterisation of habitat-forming species, with potential to feed indicator-based frameworks.
Transversal: build on previous projects. Data infrastructure and taxonomic expertise to standardise and mobilise data, and to connect with existing initiatives.
