About

The Marchesi di Rampingallo winery is located in Contrada Rampingallo, in the Salemi-Marsala (TP) area. The winery is located in the municipality of Menfi, precisely on the SP48 to Porto Palo di Menfi (AG).

For almost three centuries, Rampingallo has belonged to the Russo Messina family, which has identified the territory's authentic vocation by completely renovating the winery's winemaking process and renovating the baglio dating back to the second half of the 18th century, transforming it into a modern plant for the production of high quality wines, thanks to the use of the most advanced technologies.

The vineyards, of indigenous and allochthonous varieties, extend for about 269 hectares between the hills of Salemi and Marsala, at an altitude between 60 and 260 metres. The vineyards have been planted on hilly land with a medium slope, particularly suitable with a southern exposure, characterised by a favourable microclimate, a wide temperature range between day and night and mitigated by southerly winds.

The vineyards are mainly espalier-trained with Guyot pruning, growing on marl-clay soil that gives the wine special characteristics such as structure, longevity and softness, releasing complex olfactory and taste sensations. Part of the vineyards of Grillo and Nero d'Avola grapes are now bush-trained.

Marchesi di Rampingallo has its roots in history. In fact, on the evening between 12 and 13 May 1860, Garibaldi, the Hero of Two Worlds, and his Thousand arrived at the Rampingallo farm where they spent the night. And it is precisely on those hills that the famous baglio of Rampingallo stands today, a typical fortified baglio used as a country house with warehouses and houses for the farmers and stables for the animals.

Not far away, it is possible to see the plaque erected on the occasion of the centenary in honour of the Man of Two Worlds, reinforcing the link and deep value between the territory and history, which have always characterised the company. It still exists today, and can be admired in all its majesty, the olive tree where General Garibaldi, seated to recover from the fatigues of the landing, pondered the strategy of attack on the Bourbon troops of General Landi, stationed at Calatafimi.

The history of Marchesi di Rampingallo is strongly linked to Sicily's winemaking tradition, which has its roots in the Catalan Di Simon family, Spanish refugees first in France and then in Sicily, who arrived in the Trapanese area in the second half of the 1500s and contributed to the worldwide success of Marsala wine.

The earliest record of the Marsala wine trade dates back to 1773 when J. Woodhouse shipped 60 casks of 412 litres each to England. Thus began the great history of a wine that was then called ‘English Madeira-style Sicilian wine’, much appreciated in Anglo-Saxon countries. Together with the Woodhouses, some English gentlemen, the Inghams, and the Witakers, with a flair for business, moved from England to Sicily to sell a new product called Marsala to the world.

In 1811, the De Simone family, wealthy landowners in the wake of the English, inaugurated their wine cellar in Marsala in the baglio they owned, which led from there to Salemi, from where the ‘Regie trazzere’ (Royal Trails) departed, crossing the whole island and then, from there, north to Palermo or south to Castelvetrano. The De Simone's business developed to the point of creating warehouses and stores not only in Italy and Europe but also in the United States.

Today, the Russo family has continued the ancient tradition by entirely renewing the wine production chain on their own farm and restructuring the baglio di Menfi, dating back to the second half of the 18th century, transforming it in 1998 into a modern plant for the production of high quality wines.
