RICE
About
Pakistani Basmati rice is globally renowned for its extra-long grain, distinct "popcorn-like" aroma, and non-sticky texture. Since 2021, it has been protected under a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, ensuring that only rice grown in specific fertile regions of Punjab and Sindh can bear the name.
The Pakistani market is dominated by several elite cultivars, each serving different culinary and commercial needs:
1121 Basmati (The "Extra Long" Grain)
This is currently the most popular variety for high-end exports due to its record-breaking length.
-
Raw Length: 8.0 mm to 8.4 mm.
-
Cooked Length: Can elongate up to 20 mm - 22 mm.
-
Best For: Premium Biryani and Pilau where visual presentation is critical.
Super Kernel Basmati (The "King of Rice")
Considered the "standard" of quality, it is famous for its natural, intense aroma.
-
Raw Length: 7.4 mm to 7.5 mm.
-
Characteristics: Known for superior aging (often aged 12–24 months) which enhances flavor and reduces stickiness.
D-98 (Sindh Basmati)
Primarily grown in the Sindh province, this variety offers a specific pearl-white color.
-
Raw Length: ~6.8 mm to 7.0 mm.
-
Characteristics: Strong aroma and a slightly more affordable price point compared to 1121, making it a favorite for West and East African markets.
Traditional Basmati (Basmati 370)
The ancestor of modern varieties, preserved for its unrivaled nutty taste.
-
Raw Length: ~7.2 mm.
-
Characteristics: Finer grain and more delicate texture than 1121.
