From 2D Quantum Materials to 3D Aerogels: Next-Generation Batteries with Fast Ion Transport and Built-in Safety (HE 2027 D2-07)

About

We are building a consortium for HORIZON-CL5-2027-04-Two-Stage-D2-07 to develop next-generation battery concepts in which advanced materials are the key enabler. Our approach is to engineer 2D quantum materials (graphene, hexagonal boron nitride, borophene and B-C-N ternary phases) into 3D aerogel architectures that serve as electrodes, separators and thermal management layers within the same cell.

Today's batteries face a trade-off between charging speed, energy density and safety. Our aerogels address all three: their open 3D networks and tailored 2D interfaces enable fast ion transport, while boron nitride-based structures combine high heat dissipation with electrical insulation to prevent thermal runaway.

Objectives

Develop scalable synthesis routes for 2D-material-based 3D aerogels with controlled composition and porosity.
Integrate them as electrodes, separators and electrolyte hosts in Na-ion and beyond-lithium chemistries (for example Li-S, Mg-ion and Ca-ion).
Demonstrate fast-charging performance with improved safety in pouch-cell prototypes.
Assess manufacturability, cost and environmental impact, including recyclability, to prepare a credible path toward industrial uptake.

Our contribution

EQAL at Istanbul Technical University and our spin-off Next-Ion Energy bring materials design, synthesis, characterisation and lab-scale cell prototyping. Our relevant track record includes an ERC Starting Grant on quantum-engineered energy storage, EIC funding for a boron-carbon-nitrogen aerogel, two 2025 Horizon Europe EIC Seals of Excellence, publications in PNAS (2023, 2026) and multiple patent applications on aerogel synthesis, separators and electrodes.

Partners we are looking for

Battery cell manufacturers or pilot lines to scale up and validate cells; automotive or stationary storage end users to define requirements; research partners in electrochemistry, multiscale modelling and AI-driven materials discovery; LCA and sustainability experts; and a partner experienced in dissemination, exploitation and standardisation.

Contact us to discuss roles and how your expertise fits the consortium.
