AI-driven Energy Efficiency Assistance for Existing Detached Houses

Innovation & Developement director at Spara Energia Oy

Helsinki, Finland

About

Context and challenge

The majority of European small houses were built before modern energy efficiency standards. Traditional energy certificates and renovation plans are often expensive, slow to produce, and poorly aligned with real energy consumption. As a result, homeowners and public actors lack practical tools to understand where improvements truly matter. There is a clear need for scalable, data-driven solutions that enable step-by-step energy efficiency improvements based on actual usage.

Proposed solution

Spara Energia is developing an AI-based energy efficiency assistance system for existing small houses. The solution combines real electricity consumption data, local weather data, and user-provided building information to create a practical and easy-to-understand energy efficiency profile for each home.

Instead of relying on static calculations, the system analyses how much energy a house truly needs under real operating conditions, enabling realistic and prioritised improvement pathways. To clearly demonstrate the impact of each energy efficiency measure, Spara Energia has developed a real-time, data-driven energy efficiency indicator, the Spara Number, which reflects the actual energy demand of a building based on real consumption and weather conditions.

Objectives of the cooperation

  • Pilot and validate the solution across different European climates and building typologies

  • Co-develop new features, such as integrations with smart devices, heat pumps, and local energy systems

  • Explore pathways for large-scale deployment via municipalities, energy companies, and housing organisations

  • Support alignment with EU climate, renovation, and decarbonisation targets

Type of partners sought

  • Energy companies and grid operators

  • Municipalities and public housing actors

  • Technology providers (IoT, smart home solutions, heating systems)

  • Research organisations and universities

  • Financial and insurance sector partners (e.g. banks, mortgage providers, insurance companies)

  • EU project coordinators and funding-related partners (e.g. public funding bodies, innovation agencies)

Expected impact

The cooperation aims to lower the barrier for energy efficiency improvements in millions of existing homes, reduce energy consumption and emissions, and provide households and stakeholders with clear, actionable guidance instead of complex and static reports.
