Solar Energy & Dust Impact Modelling for Improved Forecasting

Postdoctoral Researcher – Atmospheric Science & Renewable Energy at The Cyprus Institute

Limassol, Cyprus

About

I am a Post-Doctoral Researcher at The Cyprus Institute working on solar energy, atmospheric modelling, and the impact of aerosols and dust on surface radiation and PV performance. My research integrates model-based methods (WRF-Chem, CAMS solar gridded), reanalysis datasets (ERA5, MERRA-2), and satellite observations (MODIS, AERONET) to assess solar irradiance variability across the Eastern Mediterranean & Middle East.

I am currently developing forecasting approaches that combine information from atmospheric models (dust and no-dust conditions) together with satellite estimates of solar radiation.

What I Can Offer

  • Experience with WRF-Chem simulations, including dust-related processes

  • Development of methods to improve solar-energy forecasting using multi-source atmospheric data

  • Analysis and cross-comparison of solar-radiation datasets from models, reanalysis, and satellite observations

  • Analysis of dust and aerosol impacts on PV performance

  • Experience with HPC workflows, Python/xarray, and large atmospheric datasets

What Type of Partner I Am Looking For

I am open to collaborating with:

  • Research organisations or universities active in atmospheric modelling, solar energy, aerosol–radiation impacts, or renewable-energy assessment

  • Groups working on PV systems, solar engineering, energy modelling, or AI/ML relevant to solar forecasting

  • Partners aiming to enhance solar-energy forecasting, whether operational, pre-operational, or research-oriented

  • Institutions in dust-affected regions interested in comparative or joint analysis

What Partners Could Offer

Partners may contribute through:

  • Expertise in solar energy, PV performance analysis, forecasting, or climate modelling

  • Collaborative methodological development, including validation or comparative studies

  • Experience in energy systems, climate adaptation, or digital decision-support tools

  • Participation in Horizon Europe proposal development, publications, or knowledge exchange
