Non-Flammable Ceramic Electrodes for Next-Generation Lithium Batteries

UC3M Knowledge Transfer Office at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid

Madrid, Madrid, Spain

About

Researchers at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid have developed fully inorganic, solvent-free ceramic electrodes for rechargeable lithium batteries using powder extrusion molding. Unlike conventional electrodes, this process eliminates organic binders and solvents, resulting in non-flammable, high-density electrodes capable of operating above 200 °C.

These ceramic sheets (50–2000 µm) offer higher energy capacity per area—up to 10× depending on thickness—greater reliability at high temperatures, and weight reduction of up to 40% by removing inactive additives. The entire electrode material is active, maximizing electrochemical efficiency and making it ideal for solid-state battery systems.

Manufacturing is scalable, low-cost, and compatible with existing industrial processes.

Collaboration sought: Funding, Manufacturing or Commercial Agreements with battery developers or manufacturers to scale production and commercialize the technology.
