Scalable Energy Communities in Gran Canaria: citizen & industrial models with PV, storage and one-stop-shop support

About

Gran Canaria offers hands-on expertise in designing, implementing and scaling both citizen and industrial energy communities in island contexts.

We have already deployed four energy communities (two citizen and two industrial). Our flagship urban project in Siete Palmas integrates 22 PV installations across 11 rooftops, reaching around 2 MW of installed capacity and demonstrating how collective self-consumption can be scaled in dense urban environments.

In parallel, we are developing models adapted to key economic sectors. In the tourist area of Playa del Inglés, we are integrating renewable energy into high-demand hospitality environments. In the Arinaga Industrial Estate, we are advancing a large-scale industrial energy community combining around 2 MW of PV with a 12 MWh battery system, enhancing flexibility, resilience and competitiveness.

To support replication, Gran Canaria has established a dedicated one-stop-shop for energy communities, covering legal, technical, financial and organisational aspects. Through this structure, we have already promoted nearly 20 energy communities, many of which are now entering implementation.

We are looking to collaborate with regions, islands, cities, industry and project partners interested in scaling energy communities, integrating storage, and developing innovative governance and financing models in real-world conditions.
