About

The Energy Transition Agenda of Gran Canaria is the result of a joint effort between the Island Council and the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, which gives it a strong scientific and technical foundation. It is not merely a political document, but a tool built on real data, rigorous analysis, and academic knowledge applied to the territory. This collaboration ensures that energy decisions are based on evidence and on a deep understanding of the island’s energy system.

One of its key features is that it is fully adapted to the reality of an isolated energy system. Unlike mainland systems, Gran Canaria cannot rely on electrical interconnections, which requires the design of a self-sufficient model where security of supply, grid stability, and reduced external dependence are essential. For this reason, the Agenda places strong emphasis on energy storage, smart demand management, and diversification of the energy mix—structural elements in island territories .

Moreover, the Agenda goes beyond planning and actively guides implementation on the ground. It promotes a distributed energy model based on self-consumption, citizen participation, and energy communities, integrating energy generation into already developed spaces and bringing it closer to people’s daily lives . In this sense, it serves as a practical roadmap to move towards a more sustainable, resilient, and territorially adapted energy system in Gran Canaria.
