AI Digital Twin & IoT Control for Resource-Efficient Greenhouses — Space-Validated for Mediterranean Extreme Climates
CEO at Tanit Horizon – Where Space Meets Soil
About
Core digital services
Tanit Horizon develops AI-driven closed greenhouses and modular container farms, combining, soilless culture, IoT sensor networks with digital-twin technology to continuously optimise water consumption, energy use, substrate status and crop performance. Our technology has been developed to serve in space environments — an extreme test bench for closed-loop resource management under strict constraints, including Space Station and analog mission laboratory conditions — and it perfectly suits to be now adapted for Mediterranean agrifood contexts where water scarcity and energy costs are critical operational challenges.
The system operates at TRL 6, with pilot validation ongoing in Mediterranean greenhouse environments. It targets up to 90% water savings compared to conventional irrigation methods, up to 70% reduction in energy demand through smart automation and renewable energy integration, and sustained crop yields of 2 kg/m²/10 days in controlled environment production.
Key capabilities include:
· Digital twin modelling: real-time virtual replica of the growing environment, enabling predictive control and scenario simulation before any physical intervention
· IoT-based climate and irrigation automation: closed-loop regulation of temperature, humidity, CO₂, fertigation, and photoperiod
· AI predictive analytics: early detection of resource inefficiencies, plant stress, and yield deviations
· Energy & water consumption dashboards: operator-facing KPIs and alerts to support daily management decisions
How it applies to the agrifood sector
Mediterranean SMEs face a compounding challenge: in water-scarce regions, irrigation already consumes over 80% of available freshwater resources, yet agricultural output remains insufficient to meet local demand. Rising energy costs and growing regulatory pressure to demonstrate environmental sustainability compound this challenge further. Tanit's system addresses all three simultaneously through integrated automation. The space-heritage of our core technology ensures robustness in resource-constrained conditions — a quality directly transferable to greenhouse operations in arid or semi-arid climates.
Type of agrifood partner sought
We are looking for agrifood SMEs operating greenhouses or container farms, particularly in water-stressed Mediterranean regions, who are interested in piloting an AI-based digital-twin and IoT control solution to reduce resource consumption and stabilise production within a GATE 5.0 co-innovation project.
