Bioclimatic Tower – Passive Ventilation and Thermal Regulation System

Independent Innovation Project Developer at Independent Innovation Projects

Barcelona, Spain

About

The Bioclimatic Tower is an architectural and environmental-control concept designed to use natural airflow and thermal inertia as functional parts of a building.

The system is based on two physically differentiated airflow paths:

  • a windcatcher-based intake system that captures outdoor air and directs it towards the lower part of the inhabited space;

  • a separate high-level exhaust system intended to remove warmer indoor air using vertical height, stack effect and wind-assisted extraction.

The exhaust geometry can also explore a Venturi-type effect at the upper outlet to improve passive extraction under suitable wind conditions.

Keeping intake and exhaust paths separate is an important part of the concept, helping avoid uncontrolled short-circuit airflow between both functions.

The tower and surrounding structure can also provide thermal mass, using the building itself to moderate temperature variations before relying on active heating or cooling systems.

The objective is not to eliminate mechanical ventilation or climate-control equipment in all conditions.

The objective is to investigate how passive architectural mechanisms can reduce:

  • active cooling demand,

  • ventilation energy consumption,

  • indoor temperature peaks,

  • and dependence on conventional climate-control systems.

Potential applications include:

  • low-energy housing,

  • rural accommodation,

  • off-grid buildings,

  • modular buildings,

  • agricultural and rural facilities,

  • climate-resilient buildings,

  • and hybrid passive/active environmental-control systems.

The concept is currently at the architectural and engineering-development stage.

Key parameters still require modelling and experimental validation, including:

  • airflow and pressure differences,

  • temperature distribution,

  • thermal inertia,

  • wind behaviour,

  • humidity,

  • condensation risk,

  • indoor air quality,

  • and structural integration.

No validated energy-saving percentage, airflow rate or thermal-performance figure is currently claimed.

I am looking for architecture, engineering and research partners with expertise in bioclimatic design, passive ventilation, CFD, building physics, thermal modelling, heat and mass transfer, indoor air quality, structural engineering, sensors, environmental monitoring and prototype construction.

The first cooperation objective would be to develop a numerical model and an instrumented prototype to evaluate performance under different temperatures, wind speeds, wind directions and operating conditions.

Once the passive system has been independently characterised, it could also be explored in combination with renewable energy, energy storage, water-management and autonomous-building technologies.
