About

H2SITE is a deep-tech company based in Bilbao, Spain, specializing in advanced membrane reactor technology for on-site production and separation of high-purity hydrogen. Founded in 2020 as a spin-off from TECNALIA and the Eindhoven University of Technology, H2SITE addresses challenges in hydrogen transportation and storage by enabling efficient, decentralized hydrogen generation from various feedstocks.

Core Technology

At the heart of H2SITE's innovation is its proprietary palladium-alloy membrane reactor system. This technology integrates hydrogen production and purification into a single step, allowing for the extraction of hydrogen with purities exceeding 99.97%. The membranes are highly selective to hydrogen and resistant to contaminants, ensuring durability and efficiency in various applications.

Applications

H2SITE's membrane reactors are versatile, capable of processing multiple hydrogen carriers such as ammonia, methanol, and syngas. They are also effective in separating hydrogen from blends with natural gas, CO, or CO₂, making them suitable for integration into existing gas infrastructures, including pipelines and storage facilities.

In the maritime industry, H2SITE offers onboard ammonia crackers, enabling ships to produce hydrogen fuel on demand, thereby reducing CO₂ emissions. Additionally, their technology is applied in waste-to-hydrogen solutions, maximizing bio-hydrogen extraction from organic waste through efficient CO conversion.

Strategic Developments

H2SITE has demonstrated the effectiveness of its technology through projects like the H2SAREA initiative, where a membrane separator was installed in a natural gas distribution network in Zamudio, Spain. The system successfully extracted hydrogen from blends containing 5% to 20% hydrogen, achieving over 99% purity and a 97% recovery rate.

To scale its operations, H2SITE secured €36 million in funding, aiming to develop large-scale infrastructure projects across North America, the EU, and Asia-Pacific. The company plans to achieve multi-ton per day hydrogen production capacity by 2026, focusing on applications such as large-scale ammonia cracking and maritime decarbonization.
