The Gendarmerie General Command is an armed general law enforcement force that operates outside the provincial and district municipal boundaries in Turkey or in places where there is no police organisation, and on the coast, sea and coasts where there is no coast guard. Law no. 2803 dated 1983 on the Duties and Powers of the Gendarmerie Organisation and Law no. 2559 dated 1934 on the Duties and Powers of the Police, and other laws, the Gendarmerie Organisation operates under the Ministry of Interior. Gendarmerie units to be determined shall be placed under the command of the Turkish Armed Forces in case of mobilisation and war. According to the Law No. 2803 on the Organisation, Duties and Powers of the Gendarmerie, the duties of the gendarmerie are categorised under four main headings: judicial, military, civil and other duties; Forensic A Gendarmerie soldier on guard duty at Topkapi Palace To reveal crimes and criminals Catching criminals To transfer the evidence of crime to the judicial authorities To conduct a preliminary investigation with the instruction of the public prosecutor Administration To ensure that services to ensure general security and public order are carried out in accordance with the relevant legislation To inform the public about how to protect the society from public order offences, to take measures to prevent children and young people from turning to crime and being used in crime To evaluate information and statistics on public order crimes, to conduct or have conducted crime analyses and to determine the methods of combating crime in order to prevent public order crimes by evaluating them, To carry out activities to prevent the commission of crime, Preventing, monitoring and investigating smuggling To carry out external protection of penal execution institutions and detention houses, to transfer convicts and prisoners to various institutions and organisations, especially to judicial authorities, and to carry out transfers between prisons.
