Gerry Sutton is a PI and Senior Research Fellow at UCC-MaREI, who specialises in underwater noise management and in the application of marine modelling and geographic information system technology in the assessment, development, and management of offshore resources. He brings ten years of marine operational experience as a commercial hydrographic surveyor where he was involved in 200 + projects spanning oceanography, geophysics, high precision survey, seabed mapping, seabed resources and EIA. Sutton currently leads the EU flagship SATURN Horizon 2020 project on underwater noise having recently brought the JONAS project addressing harmonisation for UWN practice and policy in the Atlantic Area to a successful conclusion in 2022. He is UCC PI for JPI oceans PureWind project (WP on Policy and Guidelines for underwater noise management). Sutton instigated and led the EPA (STRIVE 121) project which produced Ireland’s first underwater noise maps in partnership with Quiet Oceans, France. (2012-2014). Sutton served as Irish representative to EU TG-noise from 2012-2014 and was a contributing author for the guidance MSFD guidance documents.
