About

In the project Salzburg Center for Smart Materials 2.0 the consortium (University of Salzburg and Salzburg University of Applied Sciences) developed sustainable materials based on residues from forestry and agriculture. To further refine these materials and provide use-cases, we aim to develop lightweight sandwich panels made from a tannin-foam core reinforced with furanic resin impregnated natural fibers as outer layer.

Currently, sandwich panels are a staple of light-weight construction, but almost exclusively based on polystyrene/polyurethane foam cores covered in epoxy resin reinforced carbon or glass fiber. We aim to develop and characterize bio-based alternatives for these products.
