AI-Powered 3D Surface Inspection
About
The Polymer Competence Center Leoben (PCCL) is a COMET K1 research center specializing in polymer engineering and materials science, with a strong track record of application-oriented R&D in collaboration with industry. With over two decades of experience, PCCL supports the development and integration of innovative technologies in manufacturing environments, particularly in areas relevant to lightweighting.
Our research into AI-powered surface inspection, such as the “Measuring the Visible” system, addresses key challenges outlined in the Eureka Lightweighting Call. These include the need for precise, reproducible quality control, intelligent defect detection, and digital tools that reduce waste and improve efficiency. Our systems combine machine vision, robot automation, and machine learning to enable the inline inspection of complex 3D surfaces made from polymers, metals, and hybrid materials – contributing directly to the development of digitally integrated, resource-conscious, and high-performance manufacturing processes.
As a COMET center, we operate within a public-private partnership framework that encourages funded collaborations. This structure not only supports the development of high-TRL technologies but also ensures that research outcomes are aligned with industrial needs. PCCL is well-positioned to contribute to international projects that aim to advance lightweighting technologies across sectors through applied research and targeted innovation.
