About

XELA Robotics is a Tokyo‑based hardware and software firm founded in August 2018 as a spin‑out from Waseda University in Japan. We also have a presence in Austria, based in Vienna. Our mission is to give robots a “human‑sense of touch.”

Our flagship product family, uSkin, is a high‑density, tri‑axial tactile sensor array that can measure force in three dimensions (X, Y, Z) at each sensing point (“taxel”). The sensors are designed to be thin, soft, durable, and minimally wired, enabling relatively easy retro‑fitting into existing robotic hands and grippers.

Key Highlights

  • Sensing capability: 3‑axis force (normal + shear) per sensor point — enabling grip, slip, and tactile feedback in ways that go beyond simple pressure measurement.

  • Integration‑friendly: Designed for both new robots and retrofits, with digital output (reducing wiring/analog‑to‑digital hardware) and customisable patches.

  • Application domains: Particularly relevant for assembly, packaging, warehouse logistics (e.g., varied goods pick‑&‑place), as well as other fields like agriculture, service robotics, and medical/fragile object handling.

  • Value proposition: Enables robots to handle objects with higher dexterity, reduce damage to fragile goods, adapt to variable object dimensions/shapes, and in many cases automate tasks that previously required human touch.

Why is this relevant for your application

Given your interest in partnerships with a Japanese company and sensor technologies for robotics, XELA Robotics offers a tactile sensing layer that supports more advanced automation.
