The Ionian University (IU), founded in 1984, comprises twelve departments, organized into five schools with university units located across the Ionian Islands. IU is the only Greek university to hold the UNESCO Chair related to all kinds of threats (environmental, technological, etc.) to Cultural Heritage, which was awarded in 2021 by the UNESCO Directorate for Higher Education. Currently, IU employs more than 180 faculty members engaged in a wide range of research and educational activities with building facilities in Corfu, Lefkada, Kefalonia and Zakynthos. Specifically the School of Environment has 7,500 square meters of facilities in Zakynthos and Kefalonia, dealing with the subjects of food science and environmental sciences. More specifically, the Department of Food Science and Technology, based in Kefalonia, is located on a privately owned site of 42 acres and is equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure that supports both educational and research activities.
