About

Tobacco industry generates a significant amount of solid waste composed of plant residual biomass (tobacco dust, ribs, cutting residues), chemical waste (cellulose acetate filters, glues and adhesives, inks and solvents), and packaging waste (plastic films, cardboard, paper, etc.), reaching nearly 500 tons per year at the National Tobacco and Matches Authority (RNTA) plant.

Faced with such a huge volume of waste, sorting and recycling systems in industrial units remain inadequate, coupled with the lack of rigorous waste treatment protocols. Transporting this waste to landfills remains problematic and costly undertaking,

Thus, it seems urgent to investigate valorization paths within a circular economy context.

The valorization of tobacco industry waste (TIW) through various innovative approaches, aims to reduce its negative environmental impact while generating significant economic and health benefits. The valorization methods are based on the transformation of plant waste from the industrial process (shredded leaves, veins, dust, ....…) using different innovative techniques.

The ultimate goals are the development of high-value-added products from tobacco waste to support sustainable agriculture, and the creation of additional income for the industry
