About
SimpleVM makes cloud computing accessible to everyone. Virtual machines (including network and storage components) can be easily started and managed with just a few clicks, regardless of the user's experience. The user management enables easy administration of access to virtual machines, clusters, and projects.
Standout Features
Streamlined VM Management
SimpleVM eliminates the complex configurations required for cloud computing. Users can easily and directly access common functionalities.
Focus More on Your Project and Less on Infrastructure
In addition to starting machines or entire clusters, SimpleVM also enables the launch of browser-based research environments in the cloud in a matter of seconds. The same applies to installing packages that are available via conda.
Effortless Workshop Organization
SimpleVM enables larger groups of participants to easily take part in workshops in a cloud computing context. Tutors can quickly and easily start virtual machines for workshop participants, with the tools needed for the course already pre-installed.
Powerful Cluster Orchestration
SimpleVM enables the starting and management of SLURM-based clusters. Master and worker instances can be built from a predefined base image or snapshot. Both can utilize any flavor available in the cloud environment. Autoscaling allows clusters to be automatically adjusted based on the jobs submitted to SLURM.
How it works
SimpleVM is currently optimized for seamless integration with OpenStack®. All that is needed to get started is access to a pool project in OpenStack®. SimpleVM handles communication between the cloud infrastructure and the user, providing all the necessary information and control options for VMs. Its adaptable architecture is designed to enable easy integration with other cloud providers and technologies in the future.
A SimpleVM demonstrator has been deployed on the EOSC EU node as part of the EOSC United project since December 2025. This instance is part of the federated SimpleVM deployment that now spans five cloud sites.
