Dreaming and setting up our lab
AI & Digital Twin, City of Bratislava at City of Bratislava
Bratislava, Slovakia
About
Our lab should feel less like a showroom and more like a place where the city is allowed to get its hands dirty. A place where planners, technologists, researchers, city companies and slightly overexcited innovators can meet around a real problem, build something, measure it, argue about the results and try again.
Its location should be part of the experiment too. Putting it near the Danube — potentially even in the inundation zone — sounds slightly mad, which is precisely why it is interesting. If we want to work on water, flooding, climate resilience and adaptation, there is something refreshingly honest about doing it somewhere where the river keeps us humble and gives us a little skin in the game. The lab should be rooted in Bratislava’s actual conditions, not protected from them.
It can also become a meeting point for things that already exist across the city but do not always meet: university researchers, city teams, TU-BA, SmartLab, KOLO, water experts, startups, developers and other partners. The ambition is not to create another grand innovation umbrella, but a practical place where those worlds occasionally collide in useful ways.
And perhaps most importantly, it should make experimentation feel normal. Not every pilot needs to become a procurement, a new platform or a five-year programme. Some ideas will scale. Some will change shape. Some will fail spectacularly but teach us exactly what we needed to know. That is not a bug in the model. That is the model.
