My name is Eseza Musoki. I am a mother of three, and I love cooking Ugandan cuisines. Hence, I decided to put my passion into clean cooking technology business.

My organisation

Conservation and Development Uganda Ltd(CODE) is a women-led established and duly registered company under the laws of Uganda. CODE is the manufacturer and distributor of her innovative locally designed energy efficient Cookstove, under the trade name Wuja stove. The Wuja stove is designed with a built-in fan that is powered by solar. The stoves have air that is forced into the chamber using the fan and it is this forced air that creates faster, efficient and smokeless burning of pellets and briquettes. This has enabled customers to switch from charcoal to the pellets and briquettes as the biofuels can’t be used on traditional stoves. CODE also sells the modern biofuels such as pellets and briquettes, made from agricultural wastes. By replacing charcoal with clean biofuels, CODE Uganda contributes to reducing carbon emissions, combating deforestation, and promoting sustainable energy use. They are also cheaper than charcoal – for example, one of our customers reduced their monthly fuel expenditure by 55% from UGX 360,000 (4 bags of charcoal) to UGX 165,000 (60kgs of pellets at UGX 75,000 and 50kgs of briquettes at UGX 90,000). Our clean cooking technology empowers women as the significantly reduced cooking time allows them to attend more time to other household activities or their income-generating activities. The reduced exposure to smoke leads to improved health for women and children. Our first 120 customers, the domestic users have reported about our Wuja with high satisfaction. But now two new targets are set. 1\. Affordability of the stove: We want to integrate PayGo in the concept. This is a system in which people who aren’t able to pay the full price of the stove at once pay in installments. 2\. Monitoring stove usage patterns to get data that can be used for carbon credits: We want to develop remote monitoring devices for cookstoves to be able to track the usage patterns to create data used for carbon credit.

About me

I hold a BSc in Agricultural Engineering. As a wife and mother cooking for my family, I mostly used charcoal as the fuel to cook with. I fully realised that using the charcoal proved to be a hassle as it was expensive, messy and brought a lot of smoke. This prompted me to use my engineering background to create a solution: a clean efficient pellet stove.
