About
Masdiag is a medical diagnostic laboratory and innovative R&D centre specializing in developing, validating, and implementing analytical methods based on mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS, GC-MS). We are a pioneer in applying Dried Blood Spot (DBS) and alternative microsampling technologies to routine and advanced diagnostics - covering metabolomics, steroid hormone profiling, vitamins, neurotransmitters, fatty acids, toxicology, and Therapeutic Drug Monitoring (TDM).
While traditional Point-of-Care (POC) tests often sacrifice analytical sensitivity, our "Beyond-POC" model combines patient-centric remote microsampling with the reference-grade accuracy of central laboratory mass spectrometry, directly supporting green healthcare and environmental protection:
-
Low-Carbon Footprint Diagnostics & Medicine: Ambient-stable DBS microsamples eliminate the need for energy-intensive cold-chain logistics (dry ice, refrigerated transport) and significantly reduce carbon emissions associated with patient travel to blood collection facilities.
-
Green Analytical Chemistry & Waste Reduction: Transitioning from traditional liquid venous blood collection to paper-based DBS microsampling eliminates the drawing of excessive, unnecessary volumes of blood (reducing sample size from milliliters to microliters) that must subsequently be disposed of and incinerated as biohazardous waste. Furthermore, replacing standard plastic blood collection tubes (vacutainers) and syringes with paper cards - alongside a massive reduction in toxic organic solvents and chemical reagents - drastically cuts single-use laboratory plastics and hazardous medical waste.
-
Ultra-Sensitive Detection of Contaminants and Pollutants: We are also able to develop high-sensitivity LC-MS/MS and GC-MS assays for environmental monitoring, food safety, and Human Biomonitoring (HBM). LC-MS methods detect trace levels of xenobiotics, persistent organic pollutants (PFAS), endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs such as bisphenols and phthalates), pesticides, and mycotoxins in both environmental matrices and biological samples.
Social Inclusion, Equity, and Healthcare Resilience
Our diagnostic model removes structural barriers to precision medicine and promotes health equity:
-
Eliminating Geographical and Mobility Exclusion: Painless, at-home finger-prick blood collection and standard postal delivery provide equal access to advanced diagnostics for populations in rural and remote areas (a shared challenge across regions in Poland and even more so in Norway and Iceland), elderly citizens, and people with mobility impairments.
-
Inclusive Diagnostics for Vulnerable Groups & Sex/Age-Specific Medicine: Minimal sample volume makes testing safe and stress-free for neonates, children, and chronically ill patients. Furthermore, our multi-analyte steroid and metabolic panels support personalized reference intervals tailored to sex and age, addressing gender gaps in clinical diagnostics.
-
System Resilience: Decentralized sampling relieves overburdened healthcare staff, reduces pathogen transmission risks in clinical settings, and enables scalable population-wide screening during public health crises.
Proposed R&D Collaboration Areas in POLNORIS
We are looking to join or co-create bilateral consortia (as a Polish Enterprise / Project Partner or Project Promoter) in the following areas:
-
Human Biomonitoring of the Exposome & Environmental Health Inequalities: Developing high-throughput microsampling panels to simultaneously measure environmental pollutants (PFAS, EDCs, pesticides) and stress/endocrine biomarkers across vulnerable or remote populations.
-
Low-Carbon Remote Healthcare & Life Cycle Assessment (LCA): Designing and validating ambient-stable microsampling diagnostic pathways for lifestyle, cardiometabolic, and endocrine disorders, coupled with environmental footprint (LCA) validation.
-
Green Extraction & Sustainable Therapeutic Drug Monitoring (TDM): Developing solvent-free sample preparation and home-based TDM (e.g., antibiotics, immunosuppressants) to optimize dosing, combat antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and reduce pharmaceutical contamination in wastewater.
