About

The Central Mining Institute – National Research Institute (GIG-PIB) focuses on solving problems related to the extraction of mineral resources, particularly underground coal and metal ore mining. The extractive industry poses many complex challenges in occupational safety, mining technology and environmental protection. In these research areas, GIG-PIB has highly qualified staff and extensive experience, as well as unique databases, experimental mines and test sites, and specialist laboratories equipped with state-of-the-art instruments. The Institute uses this experience to develop new scientific specialisations and to take on research topics of global importance. This includes radiation protection, radiometry and radioecology: an accredited laboratory measures natural and artificial radioactivity (including NORM) in environmental samples, water, waste and building materials, as well as radon and ionising radiation doses. The Institute’s strong position has been built through cooperation with many industrial sectors in Poland and abroad, and through participation in international scientific and technical consortia, within which GIG-PIB has carried out, and continues to carry out, several hundred international projects.
