HEAT: Hybrid Energy for Advanced Thermal networks

Sergio Díaz de Garayo Balsategui

Research Project Manager & Senior Engineer at Centro Nacional de Energías Renovables (CENER)

Sarriguren, Spain

About

This project proposes a circular and systemic approach that connects the solar and heating sectors through the reuse of PV panels. Decommissioned modules from repowering projects will be retrofitted into hybrid photovoltaic–thermal (PVT) collectors, capable of producing both electricity and low-temperature heat. These hybrid panels will feed a low-temperature water loop (typically 10–25 °C), forming the backbone of a 5th Generation District Heating and Cooling (5GDHC) network. Decentralized heat pumps located inside each dwelling or apartment will use this shared loop as a heat source instead of ambient air, thereby eliminating the need for outdoor units.

This integrated system delivers several advantages. By evaporating against pre-warmed water from the PVT network, the coefficient of performance (COP) of each heat pump is increased, reducing electricity consumption and improving seasonal efficiency. The absence of outdoor units removes noise and visual impact, two major barriers to public acceptance of heat pumps in urban environments. Moreover, the electricity produced by the PVT panels can be self-consumed within the building or community, further reducing operating costs and grid dependency.

The project would need the collaboration of eco-plastic manufacturing partners to develop a prototype integrating photovoltaic and solar thermal technologies, enabling validation of the proposed solution under real operating conditions. In parallel, the involvement of a heat pump system integrator would be required to design a fifth-generation thermal network as the foundational infrastructure for further development. Moreover, other stakeholders are encouraged to participate in the replication and upscaling of the HEAT solution.
