City Advisor NetZeroCities/ICLEI at ICLEI
Freiburg, Germany
About
ICLEI is leading to complement the European Commission's Mission for Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities, a program which supports 111 European cities accelerating their transition towards net-zero by 2030.
Building on this work, ICLEI is developing a dedicated program focussing on sports infrastructure—specifically aiming to collaborate with European 100 elite clubs. Our aim is to explore how stadiums and surrounding public infrastructure, typically designed for peak use on max 30 match days per year, can serve as catalysts for broader sustainable developments (either with their fanbase or within the direct neighbourhood).
Our initial focus is on Energy, Mobility, Water & Waste and NBS, but we are open for any other interesting proposals.
The initiative is not advocacy-driven; rather, it seeks to create tangible climate-positive infrastructure solutions. The outreach potential of clubs and their fans is an important co-benefit, generating what we call “incidental climate action.”
