Looking for project: Urban morphology, lifestyles, remote work, and multimodal travel behavior in the 15MC - in a perspective of Institutional Capacity

Marcus Adolphson

Researcher (PhD) at KTH Royal Institute of Technology

Stockholm, Sweden

About

Urban morphology provide constraints and opportunities for (travel) behaviors. Due to the increased acceptance for remote work these relations are today to some degree unknown. Thereby the fulfillment of the 15MC concept to some degree is unknown as well.

The intention here is to analyze

  1. the relationships between the Built Environment and Travel Behavior (multi modal), considering the main features of the 15mC within the research theme of Built Environment–Travel Behavior (BE-TB) studies, integrated with Social Psychology , and
  2. to test the potential in municipal planning of introduce the (new) 15MC based on these findings using theories on Institutional Capacity (IC).
The intention here is to develop these thoughts further - or contribute to similar projects - in cooperation with international partners.

We can see at least two options (we have experience in conducting this kind of research):

A. Urban form

1. By using GIS define 15mc areas - in three cities
2. Through a survey gather data on inhabitants' actual multimodal travel behavior
3. Analyse to what degree the 15mc concept actually promote a sustainable behavior.
4. Based on this new knowledge refine the 15mc concept

B. Planning process

1. Analyse a planning process with the intention of implement the 15mc concept in three international cities/neighborhoods
2. Define opportunities and constraints in terms of legal prerequisites, knowledge, institutional capacity, resources, cooperation with politicians and public, common local planning procedures, etc
3. Make a comparison of the three international cities and their planning.
4. Learn and develop guidelines for planning with the aim of implementing the 15mc concept.

Possibly A and B could be combined and adjusted! One option might be to conduct three studies in three cities, make a comparison, learn and develop guidelines/refinement regarding the 15mc concept. If You find any (or both) of these research approaches interesting - or have any ideas that could be combined with the approaches above, please contact me.
