URBAN CREEK CATALYST - providing utility to small waterways
About
While large-scale river projects are well-understood, smaller urban watercourses represent a critical, yet under-researched, frontier for regenerative urbanism. Centered on 4 or 5 urban creeks across Europe (Rákos Creek in Zugló, Budapest; X in Zagreb, …) this action research project will pioneer a holistic framework for valuing and enhancing urban creek systems as multifunctional assets. We will investigate the full spectrum of ecosystem services that creeks can provide—from microclimate regulation and stormwater management to the creation of vital biodiversity corridors. To strengthen the ecological corridor function of the stream while improving the quality of life, recreational opportunities and connection with nature for local residents.
Critically, the research will assess the tangible benefits for society, exploring how creek revitalization enhances resident well-being, fosters social cohesion and mental well-being, and creates new recreational and educational opportunities. A comparative analysis with large river interventions will distill best practices, identifying what works and what fails when scaling Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) to the hyper-local context of a creek. Key sub-goals include a detailed analysis of the creek's catchment and runoff dynamics to inform water management strategies, and prevention of seasonal drying out, a critical issue for the resilience of intermittent streams in a changing climate.
