Seeking Partners: Expanding the NMT/PuT dominant transition area
About
Since the 1990's PB Consult have been engaged in mobility research, not from a traffic engineering perspective, but from a social and demographic perspective. We have a dedicated team which undertakes Mobility Research in major cities in Germany such as Nuremberg, Cologne, Frankfurt and Stuttgart. We do this on a regular basis so we can determine seasonable trends. This was particularly insightful during the years 2020-2022.
Time and time again we see the urban core of a city or metropole where non-motorised transport (NMT) and public transport (PuT) have a high mode share. Outside the urban core, these transport modes typically give way to private vehicles.
We want to undertake research to find out:
-
where is the transition area and what are the causes behind it
-
Level 1 expansion: how can we expand this transition area to include further PuT stops/stations along key PuT lines such as BRT or urban rail lines (i.e. circle to a starfish shape)
-
Level 2 expansion: how can we improve the share of sustainable transport modes for areas in between and not well served by BRT or urban rail lines (i.e. starfish to a larger circle)
Given the project duration, it is likely only possible to investigate the Level 1 expansion for a targeted zone, but it's nice to have a longer term goal.
The research project would include a desktop study, mobility research targeted at a particular zone(s) to understand the mobility challenges, implementation of methods to improve the balance for sustainable mobility in these areas. To undertake the project, PB Consult are looking for city and research partners both inside and outside of Germany.
Our Mobility Research department is experienced in a number of surveys and processes including KONTIV, MiD, SrV. We can undertake basic surveys, standard surveys, detailed multi-level surveys across multiple methods (personal, phone, post, online etc). Our Team is supported by PB Consult developed tools such as mitwirken.eu
