Oyster Ethics: Sustainable and Digital Labeling for Emilia-Romagna Oyster Farming by Università di Ferrara

BLU-ER

Bologna, Italy

About

The EticOstrica project aims to introduce a sustainable and digital labeling system for oysters farmed along the Emilia-Romagna coast, enhancing product transparency, strengthening local supply chains, and supporting environmentally responsible aquaculture. As demand grows for high-quality, sustainable, and locally sourced seafood, the project seeks to distinguish regional oysters from imported products by providing clear, certified information on origin, harvest date, environmental quality, and nutritional characteristics. Each batch of oysters will be associated with a dynamic QR code linked to a digital platform accessible via smartphone, offering consumers a complete traceability path “from sea to table.” Beyond traceability, the initiative intends to create a recognizable territorial brand capable of positioning Emilia-Romagna oysters as a premium product in national and European markets. The project will involve local cooperatives, research institutions, ARPAE, and sector consortia, working together to promote sustainable farming practices, biodiversity protection, and continuous environmental monitoring. A communication campaign will target consumers and the restaurant sector to encourage responsible consumption and awareness of local seafood value. Expected impacts include stronger competitiveness and added value for small coastal aquaculture enterprises, enhanced environmental stewardship through digital monitoring tools, and strengthened cultural ties between coastal communities and their marine heritage. Potential challenges—such as climate-related impacts on oyster productivity or regulatory constraints on labeling—will be addressed through scientific support, adaptive management, and alignment with certification standards. The partnership includes CON.UNO, Legacoop, Naturedulis, ARPAE, and the High Technology Network labs (CIRI-Agro), ensuring a solid foundation for ecological, technological, and market innovation.
