About

The proposed solution introduces smart floating buoys designed to monitor PFAS and other water quality indicators in marine environments through a combination of advanced sensors, IoT connectivity, and real-time data analysis. Currently under prototyping, the system integrates next-generation PFAS sensors (supported by standard measurements like pH, temperature, salinity, and dissolved oxygen) into modular buoy platforms capable of transmitting data via 4G/5G or satellite networks. The project aims to refine sensor performance in high-salinity conditions, build a digital platform for data visualization, and test the buoys in pilot sites such as ports, vulnerable coastal areas, and marine protected zones. By providing continuous, remote, and predictive monitoring, the buoys enable early detection of pollutants, support environmental authorities in decision-making, and contribute to cleaner and healthier marine waters. Their integration into broader observation networks and potential use with AI-based analysis or marine digital twins enhances large-scale surveillance and long-term ecosystem management. Key challenges include improving sensor sensitivity, managing development costs, and ensuring data interoperability, which can be addressed through research partnerships, public-private funding, and open data standards.
