The National Center for Scientific Research “Demokritos” (Demokritos) is today the largest multidisciplinary Research Centre of Greece. It is a public legal entity and it was inaugurated in 1961 for the installation of Greece’s Nuclear Reactor. It conducts world-class basic and applied research, for advancing scientific knowledge and promoting technological development. Today it’s six Institutes are focused on the fields of 1)Nanoscience & Nanotechnology, 2)Quantum Computing & Quantum Technology, 3)Informatics & Telecommunications, 4)Biosciences & their Applications, 5) Nuclear & Particle Physics, 6)Nuclear & Radiological Sciences & Technology, Energy & Safety. The Center is housed in a 600k sqm campus with a building area of approximately 40k sqm. Its current staff is more than 1000 people (40% female) out of which ~700 are scientists. It is participating in a very large number of EU and National projects. In EU projects only, the Center has participated in 690, coordinating many of them. The Center also participates today in 10 National Research Infrastructures. It hosts a very vibrant start-up community in its Technology Park, that hosts, among others, Research and Development Departments from Tesla and the multinational equipment manufacturer Bruker.
