The Ignaz Semmelweis Institute (ISI) is an interuniversity research institute established in 2025 as a joint initiative of five Austrian universities: the Medical University of Vienna, the Medical University of Graz, the Medical University of Innsbruck, Johannes Kepler University Linz, and the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna. The institute focuses on basic and translational infectious disease research, with particular emphasis on pandemic preparedness and response. Its interdisciplinary expertise spans epidemiology, infection biology, molecular virology, innate and adaptive immunity, diagnostics, therapeutics, and vaccine development. Through its One Health approach, the institute aims to advance our understanding of infectious diseases, develop innovative prevention and treatment strategies, and strengthen national and international research collaborations.
The Medical University of Vienna (MedUni Vienna) is one of Europe's oldest and most prestigious institutions for medical education and research.
