AI4I seeking R&D and clinical partners for trustworthy frontier AI and Virtual Human Twins in healthcare

Grant Manager at The Italian Institute of Artificial Intelligence (AI4I)

Turin, Italy

About

AI4I – Italian Institute of Artificial Intelligence for Industry is looking to join or contribute to European consortia preparing proposals under Horizon Europe Cluster 1 Health 2027, with particular interest in:

  • HORIZON-HLTH-2027-03-TOOL-04 – Virtual Human Twins (VHTs) for integrated clinical decision support in prevention and diagnosis

  • HORIZON-HLTH-2027-03-TOOL-08 – Towards the next generation of frontier Artificial Intelligence models for healthcare

Both topics are currently listed as forthcoming under the official 2027 Health call, with opening on 2 June 2027 and deadline on 15 September 2027. TOOL-04 is a Research and Innovation Action, while TOOL-08 is a Coordination and Support Action.

Expertise offered

AI4I can contribute advanced Artificial Intelligence expertise and research capabilities in areas including:

  • multimodal and foundation AI models

  • trustworthy, robust and explainable AI

  • machine learning for heterogeneous and complex data

  • computational modelling and simulation

  • AI-enabled decision-support approaches

  • federated and distributed AI

  • high-performance AI and scalable AI architectures

  • methodologies for the validation, reliability and deployment of AI systems

For Virtual Human Twins, AI4I is particularly interested in contributing AI, modelling, simulation and explainability capabilities to multi-scale and multi-organ computational approaches supporting prevention, diagnosis and clinical decision support. This positioning is also consistent with AI4I's internal opportunity mapping.

The TOOL-04 topic specifically targets complex multi-organ, multi-scale and longitudinal computational models and their integration into care pathways and decision-support tools. Relevant clinical areas can include cardiovascular diseases, cancer, diabetes, rare and degenerative diseases, immunity/inflammation and other high-burden conditions.

For frontier AI in healthcare, AI4I is interested in the development and enabling ecosystem for advanced AI models capable of working across heterogeneous and multimodal biomedical and healthcare data. The TOOL-08 topic highlights data ranging from electronic health records and imaging to laboratory, molecular and omics data, alongside federated infrastructures, HPC/AI Factories, EHDS and trustworthy AI requirements.

Partners sought

We are particularly interested in connecting with:

  • Hospitals and clinical research organisations providing relevant clinical use cases and validation environments

  • Universities and research institutes with expertise in computational medicine, biomedical modelling, bioinformatics, medical imaging and digital twins

  • Health-data infrastructures, biobanks and cohort owners able to support multimodal and longitudinal research

  • AI/HPC and digital-health organisations working on frontier AI, foundation models, federated infrastructures and large-scale computational models

  • MedTech, biotech and pharmaceutical companies interested in validating AI-driven solutions in realistic healthcare settings

  • organisations with expertise in clinical validation, health technology assessment, regulatory aspects, ethics and trustworthy AI

Type of cooperation sought

Horizon Europe consortium participation / joint proposal development

AI4I is interested in joining consortia where its AI capabilities can complement strong biomedical, clinical and healthcare expertise.

We are especially interested in discussions with prospective coordinators and core consortium partners who are currently shaping proposals for TOOL-04 or TOOL-08 and are looking for a strong Artificial Intelligence research partner.
