Microbiome-based therapeutic strategies against antimicrobial-resistant pathogens
Project manager at Microviable Therapeutics

About
Microviable Therapeutics (MVT) is a Spanish biotech SME specialized in the development of microbiome-based therapeutics and live biotherapeutic products (LBPs). We are interested in joining consortia preparing proposals for HORIZON-HLTH-2027-01-DISEASE-08: Development of innovative antimicrobials against pathogens resistant to antimicrobials.
Growing evidence indicates that a healthy microbiota plays a key role in colonization resistance, preventing the establishment and expansion of pathogenic microorganisms through niche competition, nutrient depletion, production of antimicrobial metabolites, and modulation of host immune responses. Microbiome-based interventions therefore represent a promising complementary strategy to prevent, control, or reduce infections caused by antimicrobial-resistant pathogens.
MVT has established a dedicated R&D line focused on infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Through its proprietary PharmaBiota® platform, the company has access to a collection of more than 2,000 bacterial isolates covering over 170 species, enabling the identification, characterization, and development of bacterial strains and consortia with potential therapeutic activity against infectious diseases.
As a consortium partner, MVT can contribute:
-
Isolation, cultivation, and characterization of gut bacteria, including strict anaerobes.
-
Development of defined bacterial consortia and live biotherapeutic products.
-
Lyophilization, formulation, and stability studies of microbiota-based products.
-
Metagenomic, microbiome, and bioinformatic analyses.
-
Preclinical evaluation of microbiota-based approaches for infectious diseases and AMR.
-
Microbiome sample collection and preservation technologies through our GutAlive® platform.
We are particularly interested in projects exploring novel antimicrobial approaches, microbiome-mediated pathogen displacement, restoration of colonization resistance following antibiotic treatment, prevention of multidrug-resistant pathogen colonization, reduction of antimicrobial use, and combination strategies integrating microbiota-based interventions with existing anti-infective therapies.
MVT welcomes collaboration with universities, research institutes, hospitals, clinical groups, SMEs, and industrial partners developing innovative solutions to address antimicrobial resistance.
