Structural biology expertise for antiviral drug discovery and optimisation (HORIZON-HLTH-2027-01-DISEASE-05)

About

The Protein Crystallography and Structural Immunology Unit at Navarrabiomed (Spain) offers specialised expertise in structural biology and protein engineering to support the development and optimisation of small-molecule antiviral therapeutics targeting pathogens with epidemic potential.

Our platform combines recombinant production of viral or host protein targets in E. coli, Sf9 and CHO systems, ÄKTA-based purification, molecular modelling and X-ray crystallography. Gryphon-assisted crystallisation and routine access to the ALBA synchrotron enable structural studies, while BLI and SPR can characterise binding affinity and kinetics where suitable assay configurations are available.

Within a multidisciplinary consortium, we could contribute to the structural characterisation of viral or host protein targets, the identification and analysis of functional binding pockets, and the structure-guided optimisation of candidate therapeutics. Where experimentally feasible, the determination of protein-ligand complexes could provide valuable mechanistic insights to complement structure-activity relationship (SAR) studies, antiviral assays and resistance investigations conducted by other partners.

We are particularly interested in contributing to work packages focused on target validation, mechanism-of-action studies, molecular modelling and structure-guided lead optimisation, complementing partners with expertise in medicinal chemistry, antiviral testing and preclinical development
