Cuffless Blood Pressure Monitoring with Wearable Ultrasound

Project Lead at ETH Zurich - Digital Circuits and Systems Group

Zurich, Switzerland

About

We are interested in developing a new generation of wearable ultrasound systems for continuous, cuffless blood pressure monitoring.

Unlike optical or purely pulse-transit-time-based approaches, ultrasound can directly observe arterial mechanics, including vessel diameter or cross-sectional area, wall motion, pulse-wave propagation and potentially blood-flow dynamics. Combining these complementary measurements could enable more physiologically grounded BP estimation and reduce dependence on subject-specific calibration.

Our contribution would focus on wearable ultrasound electronics, low-power acquisition, embedded signal processing and edge AI, building on existing wireless wearable ultrasound platforms ranging from ultra-low-power sensing systems to higher-performance multi-channel probes.

We are particularly interested in projects addressing:

  • continuous and ambulatory BP monitoring

  • arterial area/distension and local vascular mechanics

  • local or multi-site pulse-wave velocity

  • calibration-light or calibration-free BP estimation

  • multimodal fusion with ECG, PPG or other cardiovascular signals

  • embedded processing and real-time inference on wearable hardware

  • clinical validation against established BP reference methods

We are looking for partners with expertise in clinical cardiovascular research, ultrasound transducers, biomechanics/hemodynamics, signal processing, AI, and medical-device validation, with the goal of moving wearable ultrasound from laboratory demonstrations toward clinically meaningful continuous BP monitoring.
