About
The Centre of Sustainable Healthcare (CSH) is a UK registered charity that has been at the forefront of driving net zero and carbon reduction initiatives within the healthcare sector since 2008. Its primary objective is to integrate the values of environmental sustainability into the health and social care system, aiming to make healthcare practices more sustainable and supporting the NHS target of achieving Net Zero by 2040.
Education and training with CSH
CSH offers a wide range of training courses to equip healthcare teams with the knowledge, confidence and practical tools to embed sustainable approaches in their practice, including making changes at an individual or team level, introducing sustainability to quality improvement processes, undertaking carbon footprint calculations, and take a leadership role on meeting Net Zero targets.
CSH courses are based on the four principles of sustainable clinical practice: prevention, patient self-care, lean service delivery and low carbon alternatives.
Our educational work is focused on achieving lasting change and measurable impact at all levels of practice and leadership. Our courses are endorsed by multiple prestigious organisations including Yale School of Public Health.
SusQI, Sustainable Value and Carbon Footprint Analysis
CSH developed the framework of Sustainable Quality Improvement (SusQI) as a mechanism to support a holistic approach to improving healthcare. CSH’s sustainable value equation, used within the SusQI framework, conceptualizes sustainable value as maximizing health outcomes with minimal environmental, financial, and social costs, emphasizing a "triple bottom line" approach. We have worked across the UK and globally to embed this framework in a wide range of healthcare settings and clinical specialties, including supporting a transition to reusable products and working with organisations to evaluate the impact on clinical quality.
CSH has significant experience in carbon footprint analysis, having worked with a large number of NHS Trusts and Integrated Care Systems (ICSs) to quantify their direct and indirect carbon emissions and make recommendations for achieving lasting reductions.
